"The one thing we can say about Muslim Americans this past decade is that they have not responded the way many European Muslims have. Their more successful integration and their economic success have led to a remarkably puny number of instances in which actual Jihadists have tried actual terror attacks (and I don’t mean the countless false leads pursued by Bush and Cheney and innocent people they rounded up and abused). So to foment the notion that every Muslim-American is now suspect, or that the military, already disproportionately controlled by Christianist forces, should monitor Muslim servcemembers as rigorously as they do, say, gay ones, would surely hurt, not help."

The Real Question: What Do We Do? - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

Only person I’ve yet seen say this.  Why is nobody else using the example of European terror attacks to note how relatively small a threat America faces of home-grown terrorism?

Nothing really does justice to the sand-blasted glory of the Scott Eyre, as currently constituted.

Fort Hood

Obviously, we don’t know the details of this yet, but I just want to say I’m surprised this is the first event of its kind on a U.S. Army Base, six years into the Iraq War and nearly a decade into the Afghanistan War.  A war lasting that long is corrosive to the society engaged in it.

Mind explosion in good, good way!  Matt Yglesias podcasting with Bethlehem Shoals of Free Darko on  the Disciples of Clyde.  Lots of Jewish Knick fan bloggy goodness.

Brownstoner: New Kosciuszko Bridge Won’t Come Cheap
A $1 billion Kosciuszko?!  Cool that it would be lower since boats don’t have to go underneath, as they did with the old one.

"This is a major embarrassment for the Republicans. It’s one thing to keep your cards close to your chest. Republicans are in the minority, after all, and their plan stands no chance of passage. It’s another to lay them out on the table and show everyone that you have no hand, and aren’t even totally sure how to play the game. The Democratic plan isn’t perfect, but in comparison, it’s looking astonishingly good."

Ezra Klein - Congressional Budget Office Thrashes Republican Health-Care Plan

The other upside of Obama getting the GOP to (sort of) play ball and submit their own plan — stupidity revealed.

Great idea
"I’m wondering, why do people make albums anymore when we just download? Why are songs like three or four minutes, and why are records 40 minutes long? They’re based on the record, vinyl, the CD, and these forms are antiquated now. So can’t an album be eternity, or can’t it be five minutes? … I no longer really have faith in the album anymore. I no longer have faith in the song."

Probably like we’d like to redefine TV, but it’s still based on the form of old radio programs, right?

Pitchfork: Sufjan Stevens Calls the 50 States Album Project “Such a Joke”

People are giving Sufjan a hard time for expressing these doubts in the Album format, But really, it’s such a valid point. The way we talk about music - EPs, LPs, Albums, Sides - doesn’t make sense anymore. It’s archaic. Why can’t we talk about movements, songs, compositions, moments?

"Before the global recession, there was much talk about whether Asia and the West had “decoupled” their economies. What some of us might not have realized was that the U.S. stock market had also decoupled from the U.S. economy — and run off with Asia."

The Stock Market - Salon.com

I don’t think it’s unreasonable that the U.S. stock market’s (relatively) strong performance has almost entirely to do with investments in Asian business and not much to do with American.  Strange times we live in.

"The developer of the troubled Atlantic Yards project is getting a $55 million shot in the arm from the federal government. The money, part of $5 billion in tax credits announced by the Treasury Department on Friday, isn’t specifically earmarked for the controversial Prospect Heights project. But federal officials said it’s a vote of confidence that the beleaguered developer, Forest City Enterprises, has the ability to get its projects off the ground."

Forest City Enterprises could get $55M boost from feds

Tim Geithner (and implicitly the WH) is committed to Atlantic Yards.  Good to know, right?

"A Brooklyn driver was gunned down after a heated argument that ended with the victim fatally daring the other driver to shoot him, police sources said. After taking one or more bullets to his torso, the unidentified motorist stepped on the gas of his BMW SUV and drove from the corner of Grand Street and Union Avenue in Williamsburg to nearby Lorimer Street. There, the dying motorist slammed his SUV into a parked car, caroming it into a nearby building. He then got out and staggered into the passenger section of a parked UPS van, said witnesses."
